Up until now, Slovenia’s fastest supercomputer has hosted more than 500 researchers, scientists, professors, and students, who need its computing and storage capacity for their work on various projects. The computational power of the VEGA supercomputer is fully exploited, hosting over 30 large research projects from all over Europe. Among the most interesting are certainly the projects in medicine, such as the development and application of a biophysical computational model of hormone-sensitive prostate cancer to find the most effective therapies given the different genomic footprint of the same type of cancer, and the exploration of new methods of dosing and different radiation particles in radiotherapy, or the development of a computational model of the protective skin barrier to help predict the permeability of drugs and cosmetic products. Also on the World Health Organisation’s priority list is a project to develop a revolutionary generation of universal antidotes against snakebites, the most neglected deadly tropical disease, with more than five million snakebites causing up to 138,000 deaths and 400,000 permanent disabilities and amputations annually. Of course, there are also projects in other scientific disciplines, notably chemical sciences and materials development, biochemistry, solid state physics, astronomy, and a few commercial engineering projects. Many projects are based on the construction of digital twins, which make it possible to replicate things from nature in a digital environment, as well as projects involving learning and the use of artificial intelligence, which is increasingly becoming a reality in the modern developed world.
With the HPC Vega supercomputer, Slovenia has the opportunity to exploit its research and development potential. And it does, by making it easier for Slovenian researchers to apply for various projects, such as SMASH, and to participate in various centres of excellence, such as MultiXscale and MaX3. Companies can acquire supercomputer competences free of charge through the EuroCC SLING Competence Centre.
So far, over 500 visitors from all over Slovenia and abroad have experienced HPC Vega in person, and it has also been visited by high-ranking European representatives.
You are cordially invited to the HPC Vega Open Day event, which will take place on Tuesday, 30 5. 2023.
