On 9 April 2025, the European Commission published its “AI Action Plan for the Continent”, which aims to establish the EU as a world leader in AI. The initiative aims to transform Europe’s strong traditional industries into leaders in AI innovation and acceleration. The network of European AI factories will be enriched by gigaworks, which will also benefit the Slovenian AI factory SLAIF. These gigaworks are a joint investment by the European public sector and companies.
The Action Plan contains 5 key pillars that will guide EU policies and capabilities in the field of AI. These cover the areas of EU legislation, strengthening AI talent, building infrastructure (e.g. a network of AI factories), increasing access to big and high-quality data, and developing algorithms for strategic sectors.
With the action plan the EU Commission is 4. also launching two public consultations, running until 4 June 2025, which will play a key role in further shaping AI initiatives. A third public consultation is scheduled to start in May.
